THE FEMALE GENITAL ORGANS: WOMEN'S SEXUAL MATURITY
Women's sexual maturity, or the period during which ovulation occurs, begins around the age of thirteen and generally lasts until some time between forty-four and fifty-43 four. The cessation of ovulation and menstruation is called the menopause, or climacteric. The ages given here apply to women of the temperate zone. The tendency among peoples of the warmer climates is for women to have earlier puberty and earlier menopause. The sexual life of woman usually does not cease at the menopause, since she is capable of sexual pleasure for a considerable number of years afterwards if she has been accustomed to regular and satisfying sexual intercourse in previous years.
The decline of ovarian activity at the menopause may be gradual and the effects of the "change of life" may be barely noticeable. On the other hand, the change may be quite abrupt, and may lead to a number of difficulties that will be discussed in the next chapter. The steady advance which is being made in the knowledge of glandular activities is proving to be of practical value in making this period in woman's life easier both physically and mentally. The administration of ovarian and thyroid extracts has been found to be helpful in some instances.
