WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE BPH: WATCHFUL WAITING
If you develop an enlarged prostate, you will not be alone. If everyone discussed it openly, you might be amazed at how many of your associates share the same problem. Having company is not enough, however; you need a strategy for monitoring the condition of your prostate. The symptoms of an enlarged prostate are similar to those of prostate cancer. I low will you know which you have? And how will you decide whether to neat the condition or when or how to treat it?
The better a patient understands his condition, the better his chances are of making the right choices. It is important to become aware of the pros and cons of various tests and options. Most important is that you have a doctor with whom you can communicate. It is advisable to include your mate, if you have one, in discussions about your condition and your options.
Remember that it may be better to be treated now than later, when a change in your overall physical condition may diminish the chances of success. If a prostate problem is caught at an early-stage, the odds are greatly in your favor that you will make it through this ordeal and the quality of your life will be restored.
On the other hand, after reviewing the literature and talking with your doctor in depth, you may decide to wait a while longer. There are no simple ways to determine the best course to follow; the choice will depend on your health and other factors. The fear of complications from surgery or another treatment is also a major factor when thinking about waiting (show me the man who doesn't panic at the thought of a doctor moving a knife around between his legs!).
